DM Plant FAQ

Expert insights into ion-exchange technology, resin management, and high-purity water standards for industrial power and processing.

What water quality can I expect from a standard DM Plant?

A standard two-bed DM plant (Cation and Anion) typically produces water with conductivity levels between 10 to 30 µS/cm. If your process requires ultra-pure water (< 1 µS/cm), we recommend adding a Mixed Bed (MB) polisher.

How often does the resin in a DM plant need regeneration?

Regeneration frequency depends on your raw water ionic load and daily water consumption. Typically, plants are designed for one regeneration per 8-10 hours of continuous operation. We provide automated sensors to trigger regeneration based on conductivity breakthrough.

What is the typical lifespan of Ion-Exchange resins?

With proper pre-filtration and regular maintenance, Cation resins last 3-5 years, while Anion resins typically last 2-3 years. Factors like chlorine in feed water or organic fouling can significantly reduce this lifespan.

Why is an Organic Scavenger or Degasser needed?

Degassers are used to remove dissolved CO2, which reduces the ionic load on the Anion bed, significantly saving chemical consumption during regeneration. Organic scavengers protect resins from irreversible fouling caused by surface water organics.

Can a DM plant handle high TDS water like an RO system?

No. DM plants are most cost-effective for water with TDS < 500 ppm. For high TDS borewell water in regions like Baddi, we recommend an 'RO-DM' hybrid system where RO removes the bulk TDS and DM provides the final high-purity polishing.

What chemicals are required for the regeneration process?

The Cation bed is regenerated using Hydrochloric Acid (HCl), and the Anion bed is regenerated using Caustic Soda (NaOH). We design chemical handling systems with safety valves and acid-resistant MSRL piping to prevent corrosion.

Does Tara Enterprises offer automated PLC-based DM Plants?

Yes. Our premium DM skids feature automated multiport valves and PLC controllers that manage the service, backwash, chemical suction, and rinsing cycles without manual intervention, ensuring consistent output quality.

How do I know when the resin bed is exhausted?

Our systems include online conductivity meters at the outlet. A sudden spike in conductivity (breakthrough) indicates that the resin has reached its exchange capacity and requires immediate regeneration.

What maintenance is required for DM vessels?

Key maintenance involves checking the internal MSRL (Mild Steel Rubber Lined) coating for cracks, cleaning the strainers/lateral systems to prevent resin loss, and ensuring the air-release valves are functioning to prevent vessel vacuum.

What is the advantage of a Mixed Bed (MB) unit?

A Mixed Bed unit contains both Cation and Anion resins mixed together. It acts as a thousand-stage demineralizer, producing the highest purity water with neutral pH and extremely low silica levels, essential for high-pressure boilers.
